PMI® undertakes research every three to five years to determine how the profession has developed, the effect of emerging trends, and how project managers’ responsibilities have changed. The most recent phase of this research was completed in 2015, and the current PMP test topic outline is the outcome.
When does the PMP exam change?
PMI worked with subject matter experts from leading businesses across the world to define the PMP of the future. This research resulted in the June 2019 publishing of a revised PMP Examination Content Outline, which will lead to an upgraded PMP test on January 2, 2021.

What are the Changes applied to the PMP Exam in 2023?
On June 30, 2019, a revised PMP Examination Content Outline was released. The PMP exam’s syllabus and content are defined in this document. This indicates that PMI is now revising the PMP test to realign it with the new syllabus, with the new exam set to release on January 2, 2021.

So, just to be clear, the PMP exam is NOT based on A Guide to The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), despite what many students and trainers believe. PMI uses a number of sources for creating PMP exam questions, including the PMBOK® Guide. The PMP Examination Content Outline, on the other hand, forms the basis for the test. In June 2019, a new version of this outline was published, and PMI will update the test based on this new outline.
PMI is also waiting a long time for the new test specifications from the exam content outline to take effect in order to allow training providers across the world enough time to update their books and simulators. Students will also have enough time to prepare for and pass the current test before the switchover.
The 2023 PMP Exam Changes explained
In a nutshell, five performance domains are included in the current PMP exam, but the test will be based on three domains beginning January 2, 2021. The PMP Exam Content Outline defines these domains (ECO).

On June 30, 2019, PMI released the revised test subject outline. This change from five to three domains has the following meaning:
- The new outline is a “radical” yet very beneficial departure from all previous exam subject outlines.
- Candidates for the upcoming PMP new exam will be required to have experience in three areas and answer questions from each of them:
People (42%)
Process (50%)
Business Environment (8%)
- The test topic outline covers Tasks (what project managers perform) and Enablers within each of these three domains (the actions we take to complete the tasks).
- According to PMI, about half of the test will be devoted to predictive project management strategies, while the other half will be devoted to agile or hybrid approaches.
The PMP exam length is 230 minutes.

What are the consequences of the PMP Exam Change?
Consequence 1: The New PMP Exam Is More Extensive
According to our study of the revisions, Domain II: Process currently contains around 70% of the current exam’s material, while the other two domains – People and Business Environment – contain largely new content.
Consequence 2: Agile is a MUST
Agile and hybrid approaches will be the subject of half of the new exam’s questions. As a result, you must have both knowledge and experience working in these environments.
Consequence 3: The new PMP Exam will be more DIFFICULT
It’s no surprise that passing the test will be more difficult, given the number of new topics and methods that have been included in the exam and that you must be familiar with.
Consequence 4: A MINIMUM of 35 contact hours is required
“Verify at least 35 contact hours of targeted training that addressed learning goals in project management,” according to the PMI. However, because the exam now covers almost twice as much content, an in-depth exam prep course should be substantially longer.
Is The PMBOK Guide Changing?
The answer is No.
The PMBOK® Guide Sixth Edition is used as one of the references for the PMP Exam. At the earliest, the PMBOK® Guide Seventh Edition will not be released until Q2 of 2021. This means that the PMBOK® Guide will remain unchanged, and PMI will use the Sixth Edition as an exam reference until 2021.
As a result, whether you are taking the test before or after December 31, 2020, you should use the PMBOK® Guide Sixth Edition. However, keep an eye out for 2023.
Should I take the PMP Exam before or after the Update?
Definitely before!
The PMP test takes about 8-12 weeks to prepare for. As a result, if you read this before September 30, 2020, you have plenty of time. It is still possible if you read this after September 30, 2020, but your window of chance is narrowing by the day.
Is the new PMP exam harder?
It is a challenging, in-depth exam that covers a broad spectrum of topics related to project management. The topics covered in the exam go much deeper than those covered in other entry-level exams. The exam is difficult, but it is certainly not out of reach. With the right resources and proper study techniques, you can pass the PMP exam in 2023.
How Can I Pass The PMP Exam Before the Update?
Here are the steps we recommend. Please keep in mind that everyone learns differently, so you may need to adjust this technique to your own requirements. Furthermore, the closer we get to January 2, 2021, the more difficult it will be for you to prepare and pass the exam:

- Step 6: Participate in Study Groups and Online Discussion Forums. Though it may appear different due to the current societal norm of social distance, you may participate in online study groups to ask questions, provide answers, and meet other PMP test candidates. Online discussion forums are also a great way to meet new people, find valuable information, and learn from others’ experiences.
- Step 7: Schedule and pass your test on or around October 31, 2020. (Scheduling your exam will likely get more difficult as the day of the exam change approaches.)

So, you failed PMP Exam… What choices do you have now?

The Project Management Institute (PMI)®, on the other hand, does not disclose the PMP exam failure rate for any of its tests, therefore we simply don’t know, and any statistic provided as a “truth” is incorrect. What we do know is that the PMP test will be failed by a significant number of people. One author had said about it:

So keep in mind that if you pass the exam the second time around, you’ll be one of the select few who can call themselves a PMP, which is a significant accomplishment in the PMP world.

Recover After A Failed PMP
Let’s start at the beginning so you can develop a plan for passing this tough exam. However, before we get into the planning stage, it’s critical that you take some time to mourn. Don’t try to keep your thoughts about failing hidden. Mourning is a normal part of the human experience, and it may help you relieve tension and mentally prepare for the second time around. Don’t be pleased with “well, I’m sorry, I made a mistake.” Instead, ask as to why you were incorrect and conduct further research.
Tip 5: Don’t be afraid to ask!
Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you’re still unclear about what went wrong in your exam or how you should continue. Ask!
I suggested in Tip 2 that you study some of the lessons learned that others have shared in our PMP discussion group after failing and then passing their test. Have you seen how helpful our community is, and how many individuals have offered advice and suggestions?
So take advantage of the friendly atmosphere and ask for assistance.
When asking for assistance, keep in mind that the more specific your questions are, the better. Just stating the obvious “PMP test 2019 was a failure for me. Help. What options do I have? “If you do this, you won’t get many responses. You must be more specific and offer more information. Tell us how you prepared, what study resources you utilized, how your test went, and if you have any plans in place to prepare for your next steps.
Tip 6: Consider Getting Special Accommodations
PMI recognizes that passing a certification test might be difficult for some people. So, if you have a medical reason for needing more time, you may ask for it.
Several of our students who are ‘nervous test takers’ have told us that they acquired a doctor’s letter and were permitted to prolong the exam duration.
The following was given to a student whose mother tongue was not English and for whom PMI did not have language assistance: “PMP applicants who do not have access to a language help in their home tongue might ask for more time to finish their test. This would have to be requested prior to their exam being scheduled.” She, too, asked and granted extra time.
Tip 7: Think Positive
Your mental state is an important factor in your second round of preparation. Consider the bright side! Using visualization to get in the mood for the real experience of passing the test is a wonderful tip during the positive thinking phase. Stay quiet in a room with your eyes closed. Consider how you’ll feel once you’ve passed this incredibly challenging exam. Imagine yourself exiting the exam room joyful and proud of your success, with that amazing feeling all throughout your body. Remember, you’ve already attempted this exam, so you have a good probability of passing the second time around. Part of your success is due to your preparation, and part is due to your belief in your ability to pass.
Tip 8: Don’t Rush
PMI will offer you a one-year eligibility period once your application has been approved:
The exam eligibility period (the amount of time you have to take the exam) is one year. If you do not pass the first time, you get three chances to retake the test during the one-year eligibility term. (Project Management Professional Handbook)
As a result, unless you’re nearing the end of your one-year eligibility period, you shouldn’t take your next exam fairly quickly. Set aside time to prepare and get ready instead.
Unfortunately, not everyone follows this advice. We’ve seen a number of students schedule their second exam within one or two weeks after failing the first. They would frequently fail on their second attempt as well. That’s why we recommend taking your time to evaluate, practice a few more simulators (see next advice), and then deciding when the ideal time to retake your test is.
Tip 9: Vary Your Study Materials
A lot of students we’ve talked to stated that they had spent a significant amount of time studying for their examinations and that they had scored far over the goal on their practice exams. Despite this, they failed the exam.
They said that one explanation for the discrepancy – that is, scoring well on the mock exams but failing the real exam – is that the question style on their real exam differed significantly from what they were used to in their books and simulators. They had been accustomed to a certain kind and structure of question from the book/simulator, only to be presented with vastly different questions on the actual exam. Given the additional pressure of the exam day, they had a difficult time adjusting to the new approach.
If you’ve seen this and believe that the example questions in your books and simulator don’t match what you see on the test, it’s time to switch. Choose a new textbook. Exam simulators come in a variety of formats. You know what you saw on the test, so finding a book and simulator that matches your experience is simple. What if You Failed PMP Exam Twice

If you fail the test three times in your one-year eligibility period, you must wait one year from the date of your last exam to reapply for the certification. Candidates may apply for any other PMI certification after failing a certification examination three times. For example, if a candidate fails the PMP examination three times during his or her one-year qualifying term, he or she must wait one year before reapplying. He or she can, however, apply at any time for [any other PMI exam].
In other words, if you do not pass the test, PMI will put you on a one-year waiting period, but you can apply for any of their other examinations during that time.

The PDUs should be based on the PMI Talent Triangle, which covers “technical project management,” “leadership,” and “business/strategic management.”
For each component of PMI’s Talent Triangle, a minimum of 8 PDUs must be acquired in the Education category. The remaining 11 PDUs can be found in any triangle component.

How to Report PDUs for your PMP Renewal?
You must report your earned PDUS in order to renew your PMP. The Report PDUs link in the CCRS assists you in filling in the required information. Under the three components of the talent triangle, you must provide the Provider name/ID, Activity ID/name, Activity Dates, and the number of PDUs claimed. You will receive an update on the number of PDUs authorized, refused, and claimed once you submit this information.
Would it be a waste of PDUs if you had more than 60? It is never in vain to learn! Up to 20 PDUs earned in the previous CCR cycle can be carried over to the following CCR cycle.
PMP Renewal Step 2: Fill in the application for certification renewal
The application is the second stage in the PMP Renewal process. You may either fill out the online renewal application and submit it online, or you can download the application, fill it out, and mail it in. Before submitting, you must include your contact information, member ID, and payment information.
PMP Renewal Step 3: Re-confirm you abide by the PMI Code of ethics
You must agree to follow PMI’s code of ethics in order for renewing PMP certification.
PMP Renewal Step 4: Pay your PMP renewal fee
How much does it cost to renew your PMP? You have to pay a reduced price of 60 USD as a PMI member. If you are not a member, the PMP renewal cost $150 USD. If you’ve already earned 60 PDUs, you don’t have to wait three years to finish. You can complete the PMP renewal process whenever you have 60 PDUs in your account. However, don’t wait more than 90 days after your CCR expires to renew your PMP.

PMP Renewal Step 5: Get the confirmation from PMI on your certification status
The confirmation phase is the final step in the PMP Renewal process. You will receive information on your PMP renewal confirmation and a certificate showing your new CCR cycle when you finish the payment. If you completed the PMP Renewal successfully, you will be listed as having an ‘Active’ status and a PMP in ‘Good Standing.’ If you do not complete your PMP Renewal within one year of the conclusion of the CCR cycle, you will be placed on ‘Suspended’ status. To prevent problems, make sure you finish the PMP re-certification within that time frame.
Filling Online Application
After that, you’ll have to fill out an online application to renew your PMP certification. It must include all of your qualifications as well as your contact information. After that, you’ll have to reconfirm your commitment to PMI’s code of ethics and sign the renewal agreement.
